Barre's Nick Sweet won the Merchants Bank feature for the NAPA Tiger Sportsman division

Hometown driver Nick Sweet led a parade of young drivers into victory lane at Barre’s Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Merchants Bank opening day Sunday. Sweet drove his Fortier’s Community Care Home Chevrolet around Justin Hart on lap 18 to take the lead in the 40-lap NAPA Tiger Sportsman feature event, and cruised to his fourth career Thunder Road win. Sweet, who started 10th in the 28-car field, finished nearly a half-lap ahead of apparent runner-up Joey Laquerre.

Jean-Paul Cyr's pit crew, led by Rick Paya, knocked the Joel Hodgdon team off the top, changing two tires, filling the gas, and cleaning the windshield in 35.60 seconds.

CHAMPION – ACT Late Model #32 Sticks & Stuff/Ehler’s RV Team – 35.60 seconds (no penalties)

Runner-up – NAPA Tiger Sportsman #36 Watson Real Estate/Tofani’s Used Furniture Team – 38.00 seconds (no penalties)

Third place – NAPA Tiger Sportsman #04 A.H. Fence/Milton Rental & Sales Team – 47.04 seconds (no penalties)

Fourth place – ACT Late Model #6 Merchants Bank/Burrell Roofing Team – 47.20 seconds (includes two 5-second penalties for loose lug nuts)

Fifth place – ACT Late Model #31 VT Army National Guard/Times Argus Team – 50.49 seconds (includes one 5-second penalty for loose lug nut)

Sixth place – Barre Town Selectboard & Staff Team – 1 minute, 25.90 seconds (includes one 5-second penalty for loose lug nut)

“CLASS DAY” CEREMONIES TO HONOR THUNDER ROAD CHAMPIONS

Class Day is a fan favorite at Barre's Thunder Road!

Race fans, competitors, and officials will honor the four defending Track Champions at Thunder Road International Speedbowl during the annual “Class Day” ceremonies as the high-banked Barre, VT oval opens for its 48th season of stock car racing on Sunday, May 6. The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) returns to “The Nation’s Site of Excitement” with the Merchants Bank 150, at a post time of 1:30 pm.

The championship battles for all four of Thunder Road’s weekly divisions are wide open in the 2007 season, as all four “Kings of the Road” have either moved up or moved on. In the ultimate “go out on top” move, Waterbury Ctr., VT veteran Chad Wheeler captured his first Thunder Road title in the ACT Late Model division in 2006, and promptly announced his retirement from driving. Wheeler has sold his inventory to rookie Chip Grenier of Northfield, VT.
