Chip Grenier Takes First Win of the Season on Safelite Night

Graniteville’s Chip Grenier claimed his first win of the 2011 season on Safelite Auto Glass Night at Thunder Road on Thursday, August 4. Grenier started on the outside pole, but had a hard battle with Joey Becker and then Grant Folsom during four restarts in the 50 lap event.

After the final restart on lap 34, Grenier and Folsom broke away from the field. Nick Sweet worked his way to third, while Trampas Demers came from the 16th starting position to take fourth with Becker in fifth. Cris Michaud, co-point leader Dave Pembroke, rookie Jimmy Hebert, Matt White and Derek Ming completed the top ten.

It was a rough night for several of the top point drivers. John Donahue, coming into the night tied with Pembroke for the point lead, suffered a broken suspension on the lap 30 restart and finished 24th. Phil Scott spun on lap 34 and had to settle for 18th.

Rookie of the Year contender Dylan Payea of Henniker, NH earned his first career Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen win. He held of Blair Bessett on the final restart of what was a rough 35 lap event. Shawn Fleury cleared Mike Martin late to take second. Point leader Derrick O’Donnell just barely edged out Martin for third at the line. Bessett followed Martin to the line to complete the top five. Eric Badore, Matt Potter, Josh Demers, Mike Ziter and Mike MacAskill rounded out the top ten.

Tommy “Thunder” Smith of Williamstown earned his 22nd career Allen Lumber Street Stock win and his second of the season. Smith held off a hard charging Paul Giacherio early and beat Jeffrey Martin, Jr. on a late restart. Martin just barely held on for second, while Tim Campbell took third. Troy Kingsbury and point leader Nick Pilotte rounded out the top five. Garry Bashaw, Jamie Davis, Greg Adams, Joe Fecteau and David Whitcomb completed the top ten.

Junkyard Warrior point leader Jason Woodard of Waterbury picked up his 5th feature win of the season. Brock Parrott and Tommy Elwood rounded out the top three.

The annual Run-What-U-Brung was won by Nate Crete of Essex Junction in a 2011 Audi. James Martin of Monkton took second in a 1981 Chevrolet Camaro. The event saw over 30 street legal cars in the single elimination one lap drags.
