Thunder Road SpeedBowl
ACT Late Model Profile. Meet: Phil Scott
There’s a lot more to Phil Scott than meets the eye. This father of two enjoys spending time outdoors, building cabinets and other woodworking projects. Most know Phil Scott as the “Flying Senator” or as a fierce competitor; however this multi-time Thunder Road title holder is very modest about his career, both on and off the race track. Phil has raced along some great drivers including Ken Schrader, Dave Dion, and Jean-Paul Cyr but states that he does not favor one competitor over another. “In 2005, I raced side-by-side at Oxford Plains Speedway, with a young driver from Maine. We raced each other hard, but we never hit. On that particular day, he was my favorite competitor during the feature.”

Scott, a Washington County Senator and owner of DuBois Construction, has a racing history that goes beyond the #14 Ford Taurus. “Growing up in Barre with Thunder Road only miles away from our home, I couldn’t help but become involved in auto racing.” As a 16-year-old, Scott began working on a chain of successful local teams including notables such as “The Tampa Tornado”, Robbie Crouch. In 1990, Phil began his own racing career in the Sportsman division which in 1992, evolved into the Late Model division.
The 1996, 1998 and 2002 Thunder Road, Late Model champion states his greatest racing achievement is being a former Milk Bowl winner. Scott won the historic event in both 1997 and 2000. Most would assume that Thunder Road would be Phil’s favorite track after his various accomplishments at the quarter-mile oval, but that is not necessarily the case. “Thunder Road is definitely a favorite of mine; however I enjoy racing at any track where I am running well.” When Phil isn’t on the race track, in the State House or overseeing DuBois Construction he enjoys spending time with his wife Angie, his two daughters and their dog Toby.
