Thunder Road SpeedBowl
A trio of veteran racers claimed the checkered flag over Labor Day weekend in the Bond Auto events at Barre's Thunder Road Int'l Speedbowl held in conjunction with the ACT Tour's 200-lap Labor Day Classic event.
The PowerShift Warriors kicked things off on Saturday with a 30-lap action filled event. The race, twice the normal distance for the entry level division, proved to be a test of patience and the more experienced drivers prevailed. Maynard Bartlett Sr from Wolcott claimed his fourth victory of the season over point leader Mike Martin of Craftsbury Common, VT and Paul Sayers. Jamie Muir and Kevin Streeter completed the top five.
"Dancin'" Dave Allen of N. Troy, VT survived to post his third win of the season with a run up the outside groove over the final four laps of the 25-lap main event. Unlike most Allen Lumber Street Stock features, Sunday's Bond Auto event was marred by several crashes, which included a tandem roll-over. No one was injured in any of the incidents. Following Allen across the line was Barre, Vermont's Lloyd Blakely and rookie Jason Corliss from Plainfield, VT.
Following the post-race technical inspection, Corliss was disqualified from the event and Gary Mullen was awarded third place. Kyle Tatro from Hyde Park, VT and Underhill's Dave Fields rounded out the top five.
After a rough start to their 40-lap feature, which saw a caution before the first lap had been completed, the NAPA Sportsmen went without incident over the balance of the event. Josh Lovely of Barre, VT grabbed the lead early and cruised to an easy victory, his first of the year and eighth of his career. Sophomore driver, Northfield, Vermont's Jeff French continued his string of top five finishes with a runner-up finish. Mark Barnier from Essex Jct, VT was third. Former Sportsman Champion, Joe Steffen, also from Essex Jct, was fourth and Montpelier, Vermont's Shawn Fleury, the division's point leader finished fifth.
Thunder Road's weekly competitors have a three week break until the final event of the 2005 schedule, the New England Dodge Dealer Milk Bowl, Saturday and Sunday, October 1-2. Information on the event can be found on the World Wide Web by going to
